Maybe someone said or did something that hurt or angered you.
Maybe you’re worried about something that might happen.
Maybe you keep replaying something that already happened.
Whatever the situation is, it can seem obvious why you feel the way you do.
So it makes sense to try to change the situation.
You try to fix what happened.
You try to get the other person to change.
You worry about what might happen next and try to prevent it.

Or, when you can’t change the situation, you try to get away from the feeling.
You scroll.
You eat.
You drink.
You stay busy.
You tell yourself to let it go.
And sometimes that helps for a little while.
But none of that gives you a reliable way to change what you’re feeling.
The problem with depending on something outside of you to feel better is that you often can’t control it.
The other person may not do what you want.
And you might not be able to change the situation.
When feeling better depends on things you can’t control, it leaves you feeling powerless.
But what if you didn’t have to change the situation in order to change how you feel?
There may be something else creating your feelings that you haven’t been able to see yet.
And once you can see it, you have something you can actually work with and change.
Doodle Your Emotions™ helps you get what’s happening out of your head and onto the page.
Instead of staying caught inside the feeling, you begin to create a little distance.
You start to notice things you may not have seen before.
You start to understand what’s happening more clearly.
And most importantly, you begin to see what’s actually in your control.

That means feeling better doesn’t have to depend on another person changing, the situation going differently, or something outside of you being fixed first.
Once you can see what you can actually work with and change, you can begin to change how you feel.
Or maybe this is the first time you’ve decided to look for something that can help.
Either way, the goal is the same:
To know what to do when an uncomfortable feeling shows up, so you can change it and feel better.

Even if you’ve tried journaling, meditation, therapy, or other self-help tools, you may still not know how to change what you’re feeling in the moment.
You may understand yourself better.
You may know where some of your patterns come from.
You may even know what you think you “should” do.
But understanding yourself isn’t always the same as knowing how to change how you feel when you’re right in the middle of it.
And if you’re still depending on another person, the situation, or something outside of you to change first, you can still end up feeling stuck.
What you need is a way to see what you can actually work with and change—so you can feel better without waiting for something outside of you to change first.

This isn’t a lecture about emotions.
You’ll actually work with an uncomfortable feeling you want to change during the workshop.
Maritza will guide you step-by-step as you use simple doodles, words, colors, and prompts to get what’s happening out of your head and onto paper.
As you go through the process, you’ll begin to:
Create some distance from the feeling
See what’s happening more clearly
Notice things you may not have seen before
Understand what’s in your control and what isn’t
Begin to change what you’re feeling so you can feel better
And you’ll leave with a simple process you can use again whenever an uncomfortable emotion shows up.

Cathy knew how to help other people with their emotions.
But when it came to her own hard feelings—like shame, guilt, and rejection—she says she didn’t like dealing with them.
She joined Doodle Your Emotions™ for self-care.
During the workshop, she doodled shame and called the experience “healing and eye-opening.”
She realized she didn’t have to run from the feeling—and says the process helped her accept herself and her emotions, feel freer, and move on from things.
“I journal a lot normally, but this really did something different.
I didn’t realize how much drawing my emotions out would help or how freeing it would feel.
I’m not a big drawer or artist, but it really made a difference for me.”
— Julene M.

Created by Heartwork Journaling™
Doodle Your Emotions™ is part of the Heartwork Journaling™ Method, a simple, effective visual method Maritza Parra began developing in 2006.
She created these tools during one of the hardest periods of her own life, using simple doodles, words, and color to make what she was thinking and feeling easier to see and work with.

She began teaching and testing the early tools with others in 2007 and continued refining the Method through coaching, groups, workshops, and live events for years.
Today, thousands of people have used Heartwork Journaling™ to work with emotions, relationships, confidence, goals, decisions, and other parts of their lives.
You don’t need to be artistic.
You don’t need to know exactly what to draw.
All you need is a pen, some paper, your heart, and the willingness to see what’s happening more clearly.

You don’t need to be.
Doodle Your Emotions™ is not about making art.
It’s about getting what’s happening inside you onto the page so you can see what’s in your control.
If you can make a circle, a line, a stick figure, a scribble, or a simple mark on the page, you can do this.
There’s no right way to doodle your emotions.
There’s nothing you have to make look good.
You’re not creating something to hang on the wall.
You’re using the page to help you change how you feel.
No art experience necessary.

All those tools can be valuable.
They can help you understand yourself, notice patterns, and become more aware of what you’re feeling.
But when you’re right in the middle of an uncomfortable emotion, understanding your emotions is not enough to change how you feel.
Doodle Your Emotions™ gives you a way to see what’s happening inside you.
You take what’s happening in your head and put it on the page.
You create some distance.
You begin to see things you couldn’t see while you were caught inside the feeling.
You begin to see what’s actually in your control and what you can work with and change.
And once you can see that, you'll know how to change how you feel.
